With winter right around the corner, the temperature outside is going to start dropping soon which means you might be at higher risk of experiencing car troubles. The cold weather can cause a number of problems such as dead batteries, frozen fluids, and more.

Luckily, Lee Dodge Chrysler Jeep RAM is here to provide a few helpful tips to get your car ready for winter weather.

  • Battery Checks- Cold weather can put a lot of stress on your vehicle’s battery and it might even lose some of its charge. If you notice that your car is slowly cranking when you try to start it or it’s taking longer to start than usual it might be time to have the battery checked.
  • Oil Changes- When the temperature drops the oil in your car is likely to thicken which is a problem because it can’t effectively lubricate the engine if it’s not thin enough. To best prepare for the winter you should consider using 5W engine oil because it provides better temperature protection.
  • Tire Grip- You want your tires to be sturdy and ready to grip slippery winter roads. To check if your tires have good grip try putting a penny into the tread, if you can still see Lincoln’s head it might be time to replace your tires.
  • Winter-Ready Fluids- Many engine fluids contain water which means you’ll want to switch them out for the colder weather to prevent them from freezing. For example, windshield washer fluid is available in special formulas for winter.
  • Take Time to Warm up Your Car- Unless in the case of an emergency, you should not immediately start driving your car as soon as you turn it on in the cold weather. You should start the vehicle and give it a few minutes to warm up to help the belts and hoses warm up as well as allow the fluids to get moving.
  • Check Headlights- To prevent poor visibility in falling snow you should check your headlights and taillights to make sure they are in good working condition.
  • Snow Kits- Keeping an ice scraper, snow brush, or any other snow removal necessities in your car is always a good idea so you can make sure you have full visibility before hitting the road.
